Can a small employer outsource its health and safety function?
Yes. Ontario requires employers to meet their duties under the Occupational Health and Safety Act, but does not require those duties to be discharged by an employee. Smaller employers commonly retain an external health and safety resource to maintain the program, run inspections and keep training current, which is substantially cheaper than a full-time coordinator.
