Frequently asked questions

Does WHMIS training expire?

WHMIS has no fixed statutory expiry date in Ontario. Employers are required to ensure worker knowledge remains current, and an annual review is the common industry practice.

What is the difference between WHMIS 1988 and WHMIS 2015?

WHMIS 2015 adopts the Globally Harmonized System, replacing the older hazard symbols with GHS pictograms and replacing material safety data sheets with standardised 16-section safety data sheets.

Do supervisors need WHMIS training as well as workers?

Yes. Supervisors need WHMIS competency to direct work safely and to meet their due-diligence obligations under the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
